How to Integrate Privy with Smile.io

Emel DalabasmazUpdated September 6, 20263 min read

Connect Smile.io to Privy to use loyalty data in display targeting and personalized messages, or reward members for submitting a display. Verify the imported member fields before publishing a personalized campaign: a linked account alone does not establish that a particular visitor can be identified or has the needed values.

This workflow follows Privy’s Smile.io integration guide, checked September 6, 2026. The checks below are editorial guidance, not a report of tests in a customer account.

In Privy, open Settings → Linked Accounts → Smile.io, sign in to Smile and authorize the connection. Privy then imports existing Smile customers in the background. Its guide says large imports can take several days and describes new-customer syncing as real time; it does not promise a fixed completion time for your initial import.

Inspect a known member’s Privy record before configuring rules around these properties:

Property Documented meaning What to compare with Smile
smileio_points_balance Reward-point balance The member’s current recorded balance
smileio_vip_tier Configured VIP tier Exact tier name
smileio_referral_url Member referral URL Expected member-specific link
smileio_state Membership state Member, candidate or excluded/disabled value
smileio_updated_at Customer update timestamp Whether the record reflects the update being investigated

Do not treat one imported record as proof that a large import has finished. Compare a small, purposeful sample of records representing the cases your campaign depends on.

Configure a signup reward

Open the display’s Settings → Show Advanced Settings → Sync Integrations. Select Smile.io and the Sign up for an offer activity, then save. Privy documents adding that activity during integration setup; configure its points value in Smile’s Points section.

Before testing, record the member’s starting balance and the configured reward amount. Submit the intended display and inspect the resulting activity and balance in Smile. Use a controlled account: a test can create a real reward activity.

The reviewed guide does not establish repeat-submission limits or reversal behavior. If your offer depends on a once-only reward, verify that behavior before launch rather than inferring it from the first successful submission.

Target members using their actual field values

Under Settings → Audience Targeting, add a Custom fields condition, select the Smile property and choose the corresponding type, operator and value. Privy documents number type for points and text for a VIP tier.

Write the audience in plain language first. For example, “members above our chosen points threshold” is an editorial test scenario, not a proven campaign recommendation. Check one member above the threshold, one below it and the exact boundary implied by your selected operator.

Personalize without relying on missing values

Use the display merge tags listed in the linked Privy guide for points, VIP tier and other supported properties. Values require an identifiable visitor with the corresponding data. Membership targeting can help restrict the audience, but membership alone should not be treated as proof that every optional property exists.

For emails, use the editor’s Merge Tag menu and a segment appropriate to the required data. Preview the actual values for the audience you intend to contact.

Test case What to verify
Identified member with the required field The intended value renders
Member missing an optional field No confusing blank promise or incomplete sentence is published
Visitor outside the intended audience Targeting behaves as specified
Referral link The link belongs to the intended member
Changed loyalty value The stored value and campaign eligibility reflect the case being tested

If a field is blank, inspect the contact record and visitor identification before rewriting the display design. If the value is present but the wrong audience sees it, inspect field type, operator and rule logic separately.

Continue with Privy audience targeting or the Privy integrations directory.

Questions before you decide

Frequently asked questions

Where do I change the points awarded for a Privy signup?

Privy documents configuring the reward amount for the Sign up for an offer activity in Smile’s Points section. The Privy display’s sync rule selects that activity; it is not the documented place to set its points value.
