A custom Shopify popup in 2026 is usually an app, not a theme hack. Start with Shopify Forms or the forms inside Klaviyo if you already pay for them. StoreCensus (23 August 2026) puts Klaviyo at 274,598 email-app installs and Privy at 37,069. Theme Liquid popups still work, but they skip targeting, A/B tests and a consent record.
A popup builder plugin loads campaigns on a CMS, usually WordPress. The useful split is cloud-hosted (thin plugin, vendor CDN) versus self-hosted (Popup Maker). OptinMonster's connector is at 1+ million active installs. Popup Maker is at 780,000+. Features matter less than whether you already have a page builder doing the same job.
The expensive popup mistakes are timing, coverage and honesty. A first-load full-screen wall on mobile search is the pattern Google still flags. Forms that pass three fields lose conversions in Omnisend's 2025 data. Fake timers and stacked cookie-plus-sale dialogs teach people to close everything. Fix the trigger before you rewrite the headline.
Use a popup when you have one job on one set of URLs: capture, recover, announce, or ask. Delay it, cap it, and give it a close control. Omnisend's 2025 data put delayed email forms at 2.4% vs 1.9% immediate. Google still treats first-load full-screen promotional overlays as intrusive interstitials. Cookie consent is a different dialog.
Popups affect UX in both directions. A delayed, easy-to-close bar can save a cart or explain shipping. A first-load full-screen wall on mobile search is the pattern Google still calls an intrusive interstitial. Core Web Vitals now include INP at 200ms. Consent dialogs are a separate object. Do not stack them.
The best WordPress popup setup in 2026 is either a cloud tool with a thin plugin or a self-hosted builder. OptinMonster's connector lists 1+ million active installs. Popup Maker lists 780,000+. Those two cover most serious sites. Elementor and your ESP's form are enough when the job is one embed. Do not install three popup plugins.
A popup strategy is a short list of campaigns with owners, URLs and kill dates. Not a stack of overlays on every page. Start with one capture form and one cart saver. Omnisend's 2025 average email-popup conversion was 2.1% on 1.24 billion displays. Baymard's cart abandonment average is 70.22%. Google still penalises first-load promotional walls on mobile search.
Popups earn their keep in three places: list growth, on-site recovery, and short announcements. Omnisend's 2025 set of 1.24 billion displays converted at 2.1%. Sleeknote's 2026 set of 516 million views converted at 4.23%. Those are real. So are cookie rules, TCPA for SMS, and Google's ban on first-load full-screen promotional walls.
Exit-intent in JavaScript means watching the pointer leave the viewport toward the browser chrome. That event does not exist on phones. beforeunload is not a substitute: browsers ignore custom messages, and using it as a sales wall is hostile. Build a desktop detector if you must, add a mobile stand-in, and never run it before cookie and marketing consent.
Mailmunch subscribers live under the site's Subscribers page in the left menu. Filter there, click an email for the full record, and use Segments, Lists and Tags from the same panel.
Mailmunch site name and domain live under Site Settings > General. Add http:// or https://. Do not change the domain on WordPress or Shopify, or the plugin can unlink and forms vanish.
You cannot delete a Mailmunch account from settings. Export the subscriber CSV, then ask support via live chat and include the account email. Confirmed against Mailmunch help on 23 August 2026.
Open Campaigns, click the three dots on the campaign, choose Edit, change elements in the left panel, then toggle Publish this form and hit Finish. You can also deactivate, duplicate, delete or start an A/B test from that menu.
For popups, install the Mailmunch Wix app. For an inline form, copy the widget class from Mailmunch, add a Wix Custom Element, set class to that value and tag name to mailmunch-embed-form, then publish. The form will not show in the Wix editor.

Webhooks are Adoric's escape hatch when HubSpot or Mailchimp is not enough. You need an endpoint, an enctype, an action, and a field map from the form.

The Wizard is four buckets: email list, cart abandonment (Shopify only), offers, games. Pick a template, change text and style, open the editor only when the template is wrong.

Hello Bar can turn a unit into a social-profile prompt. Pick the Social Traffic goal, open Social Profile in Design, choose the network, paste the page URL, then save. Hello Bar's public help center has no matching article as of 23 August 2026.

Paid Hello Bar plans can show a unit in a country, a state or province, or a city inside a state and country. Create the rule under Targeting in the popup editor. Support still describes this as a paid-plan feature. Article dated 30 April 2020, still listed on 23 August 2026.
WordPress install is still the official plugin plus a site snippet. Copy the snippet from Hello Bar, install Hello Bar from Plugins → Add New, paste, activate, then clear server and browser cache. Help article updated 16 June 2026.

Goal tracking is three steps: attribution model, create a URL or JS goal, assign it on the campaign. One goal per campaign. Shopify app tracks orders without a snippet.
Floating feed: pull the Wisepops code off the site. Embedded feed: find wisp in the header template and comment it out. Some Shopify themes need a developer.
Wisepops includes one free website or more. Extra sites cost $10/month. Add the domain, install the code, deactivate to stop billing, then delete if you are sure.

Free-plan accounts delete themselves from Settings → Profile. Paid accounts cannot. Move to Free first, or email contact@poptin.com and ask them to delete it. Export leads before you confirm. Deletion is permanent.
Yes, on a paid plan. There are two paths, and they are not interchangeable. Shared Account adds someone who already has a Poptin login. User (Agency only) creates a login for someone who does not.
A view is one display of the campaign. If 1,000 people hit the site and the popup appears to 100 of them, the counter shows 100. Plans are billed on unique monthly visitors, not views. Hitting the visitor cap stops every campaign.
Create a SendGrid API key, copy the Marketing Contacts list ID from the URL (the alphanumeric string after /lists/), paste both into Poptin, Approve, then publish. A successful connection drops an API test lead on that list.
Open the popup's Email and Integrations panel, add Campaign Monitor, paste the list API ID and the API key, then Approve. Poptin's help article (15 Nov 2024) documents four fields: name, email address, phone, message.
Zoho CRM is an OAuth connection, not an API-key paste. In Poptin, Add Integration → Zoho CRM → Authenticate → Approve, then publish. Documented fields: name, email, phone. A test lead should land in Zoho Leads.
The current Wix install is the Privy app in the Wix App Market, not a manual snippet. You need a Premium plan, a connected domain and the Wix Editor (not ADI). Embedding a specific form is a second step that uses a promotions.lpage.co permalink.
Privy still syncs Convert phone signups to Postscript. Link with an API token under Settings > Linked Accounts, put Postscript's consent line on the form, then attach a keyword rule on each display.
Privy still talks to Smile.io. Link the accounts, wait for the customer import, then reward signups, target displays by points or VIP tier, and merge loyalty fields into email copy.
Attentive bought Privy in 2021. They are still two products. You can capture a number in Privy Convert and send the texts from Attentive. You need the phone field, Attentive's consent line, and a Source ID on each display.
Privy still syncs Convert signups to Klaviyo. Link the accounts under Settings > Linked Accounts, then add a sync rule on every display. Sync is one-way, lists only, not Klaviyo segments.

A click-triggered Privy display is the least annoying overlay you can run: the visitor asked. Turn off automatic show, use a tab or a page button, and publish. Privy's current help treats custom JavaScript as out of support. Do not combine a click campaign with a first-load wall on the same URL.
The 2023 'After Signup Action > Do Nothing' control is not in Privy's current help docs. Convert still shows a thank-you step after signup. You can redesign it, put the coupon on it, or keep it minimal. You cannot documentably delete it.
Privy embedded forms still exist in 2026. They only live in the Classic Designer, not the newer display builder. Create the form, customise the thank-you step, publish, then paste the embed code into your theme.
Privy targeting in 2026 lives on the Settings step of a display, not on the old When/Who/How Long cards. Set a trigger or the campaign will not auto-show. Cart rules need Shopify or BigCommerce.
Privy's old 'detected attributes' are now Profile Attributes in display Settings. They stamp signup URL, UTM, pageviews, session count, coupon and a custom field onto the contact. They are not a hidden-field builder in the current docs.

Ontraport still connects with an App ID and API key, not OAuth. OptiMonk's 3 January 2026 article is live, so the integration has not been dropped. You paste both values on the campaign, then map fields.
Keap (formerly Infusionsoft) still connects per OptiMonk campaign: Edit settings → Add new integration → Keap → Authenticate. OptiMonk's 23 December 2025 article is the live reference. The integration has not been removed.
You still install OptiMonk through Google Tag Manager as a Custom HTML tag on All Pages. The copy-code step now starts on the OptiMonk dashboard embed prompt, not a left-menu Insert code link.
OptiMonk's webhook integration is still here: you paste a URL on the campaign and OptiMonk POSTs the form data. It needs an endpoint you control. If you do not have a developer, use Zapier instead.
OptiMonk no longer asks for Klaviyo public and private API keys. As of the April 2026 help article, you authenticate with OAuth, pick a list and map fields. Older screenshots of Create Private API key are out of date.
OptiMonk no longer uses an Upgrade Plan → Cancel subscription path. As of the 19 November 2025 help article, you cancel by downgrading to the Free plan from Subscription.
OptiMonk still refunds the first payment if you ask within 14 days, with no explanation required. That rule is in the 29 July 2025 help article and in the terms of service. After day 14, canceling only stops the next charge.
Embedded OptiMonk content is a campaign type, not a separate product. It still needs the OptiMonk JavaScript in the page head, once. Shopify stores should use the app; custom sites paste the snippet from Profile → Settings → Insert code.
You cannot switch the template on an existing OptiMonk campaign. That is still OptiMonk's own help-centre rule, last updated 19 November 2025. Create a new campaign from the template you want, or duplicate the old one and restyle the copy. Pause or delete the original so two overlays do not fire on the same URL.
New OptiMonk campaigns start inactive, so nothing shows on the site until you flip them on. You turn a campaign on or off from the Campaigns list with the Active/Inactive toggle.
Variant A/B tests on OptiMonk still work the same way: add a second version of the campaign, turn it on, change one thing. Control-variant tests (hold a slice of traffic with no campaign) are extra, added from Add A/B test version.

Drip is still a direct Sleeknote integration. Paste your Drip API token (and account ID if you have several accounts), map fields, pick a tag. The companies share owners as of November 2025. They did not merge the products.
Agillic is still on Sleeknote's direct integration list in August 2026. Developer key + secret from Agillic, paste them in Sleeknote, map fields. Optional custom data (IP, signup page) if you need it.
Sendloop is not a native Popupsmart integration. You pipe it through Zapier: trigger New Popup Form Data, action Add or Remove Subscribers. Make.com is the other option the vendor mentions.
The 2026 path is the Shopify app, not theme.liquid. Install from the App Store, pick a campaign goal, publish. theme.liquid still works if you already use the web app on a custom theme.
Zapier is the long tail when Mailchimp or Klaviyo is not enough. Connect Zapier on the form, copy the API key, submit the form once, then Test trigger in Zapier. An empty campaign will fail the test.
HubSpot needs a static list. Connect from the form: Add integration → HubSpot → Connect account. Dynamic lists do not show in the dropdown. The domain must be verified.
Klaviyo needs a private API key and a list. Connect it on the Popupsmart form element, pick the list, map fields. Shopify stores usually want this plus the embed app, not a second capture tool.
Mailchimp connects on the form element, not as a site-wide toggle. Create an API key under Account & billing → Extras, paste it, pick the audience, map fields. The website must already be verified.
ActiveCampaign connects on the form with an API URL and key from Settings → Developer. Account name is the subdomain without .activehosted.com. Master Contact List works if you have not made your own.
Three ways: Google Fonts from Style → Text Size & Colors → More fonts; custom CSS on the element's class with !important; or upload ttf, otf, or woff under Settings → Custom Fonts. Paid plans only for custom fonts and CSS.

Popupsmart now labels these as team members, not subaccounts. Invite from Account → Team members. Free has zero seats. Basic has one. They cannot change billing.
