How to Integrate Popupsmart with Mailchimp
Connect the Popupsmart form to Mailchimp with an API key, choose the destination audience and map the collected fields. Before launch, confirm that a test contact reaches the intended audience with the expected values and subscription status.

Prepare the destination
You need a Mailchimp account, a form input in the campaign and a verified Popupsmart website. Record the audience you want to use and the fields your form will collect. Give the connection a recognizable name if you manage several accounts.
Connect the form
- Select the form element, then choose + Add integration → Mailchimp → Connect.
- Choose a saved connection or Add new Mailchimp API.
- In Mailchimp, open Account & billing → Extras → API keys. Create and name a key, then copy it into Popupsmart’s setup and save.
- Under Details, select the destination list. Match the fields and save.
- Confirm the integration status is enabled before testing.
Keep the API key in the connection setup. Do not put it in the public popup text or include it in a shared screenshot.
Test the audience and field mapping
Use an address you control and note the submission time. A success message in the popup is one checkpoint; inspect the received record in Mailchimp as well.
| Checkpoint | Expected result | What to investigate if it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Test contact appears in the selected destination | Account connection and saved list selection |
| Received address matches the submitted address | Form input and email mapping | |
| Additional fields | Names and other values reach their intended fields | Mapping, required fields and accepted value formats |
| Subscription | Actual status matches the signup process you intended | Confirmation settings and the contact’s previous state |
| Follow-up | The configured automation behaves as intended | Its entry conditions and message status |
If existing contacts can submit the popup, test a controlled existing contact separately. Record whether its fields or status change. Do not infer that behavior from a successful new-contact submission.
Troubleshoot a missing or incomplete contact
If the audience picker is empty, first check that you connected the correct account and have an intended destination there. If the contact is missing, search the selected audience using the exact test address, then check the saved connection and any available error details.
If the contact arrives but a field is blank, compare the actual submitted value with the mapping. Check one field at a time rather than rebuilding the entire integration. If the record looks correct but no email follows, inspect the automation and subscription state separately; contact delivery does not prove a message was sent.
The cited setup guide does not define how this connector handles every prior subscription state or confirmation configuration. Test the states relevant to your campaign and confirm unresolved behavior with support. Do not change an unsubscribed contact’s status merely to make a test pass.
Record a useful handoff
Save the campaign name, destination audience, test time and the result of each checkpoint. Record the connection name, not the secret key. This gives the next person enough context to distinguish a form issue from an audience, mapping or automation issue.
Return to Popupsmart integrations for other destinations or campaign metrics to review captured leads separately from downstream email results.
Questions before you decide
Frequently asked questions
Can I switch off the Mailchimp integration without deleting it?
The vendor guide describes an on/off status control in the integration’s three-dot menu. Check that status when pausing or testing delivery; the documented initial status is on.
