How we rank popup builders
The ranking answers one question: which builders should a small or growing site evaluate first for self-service lead capture? It covers our current directory and reflects that buying situation.
Fit and the cost of getting started take priority. Campaign controls and growth limits help us weigh the trade-offs. When options are close, we favor an accessible evaluation and a smaller initial commitment.
Positions are chosen editorially. There are no numerical weights, composite scores or measured quality gaps between adjacent ranks. Sorting by price or name changes the table's display order; the editorial rank stays the same.
- Fit for self-service lead capture
- We start with a small or growing site whose team wants to build and run its own popups. A specialist Shopify testing service or a managed marketing package serves a different buyer, so it can rank lower here while being the better choice for that buyer.
- Cost of a usable plan
- We favor a practical way to evaluate the product and a modest initial commitment. We consider free-plan limits, the paid tier needed for the campaign, annual commitments and renewal pricing. The lowest advertised number alone does not decide the order.
- Campaign controls and workflow
- We consider the documented forms, targeting, testing and integrations relevant to capture. Access matters as much as a feature's presence: A/B testing on a higher tier has a different cost from testing included in a starting plan.
- Limits as the site grows
- We consider how traffic allowances, domains, contacts and additional services change the commitment. Each row calls out a trade-off so you can see where the recommendation may stop fitting your site.
Evidence behind the recommendations
Product claims come from vendor pricing pages and documentation recorded in our tool profiles, reviews and comparisons. Every table row links to its review and pricing source, alongside a reason to consider the builder and a material limitation.
This page does not report hands-on testing of every builder, a controlled conversion test or a script-speed benchmark. Customer feedback can provide context in the linked reviews, but star ratings and vendor performance claims do not determine these positions.
About our editorial approach →Pricing, uncertainty and review dates
Prices retain their own research dates and billing caveats. Site pageviews, popup displays, visitors and contacts are different units. Annual prices are monthly equivalents, and an introductory rate may increase at renewal. Conflicting vendor offers remain flagged; we do not treat an unknown price as zero.
The editorial order was reviewed on . That date is separate from the pricing dates in the table. Updates are manual, so verify current terms at the source and use the linked comparison when your requirements differ from the default use case.
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions that matter when using this ranking to choose a builder.
Why is OptiMonk ranked first?
For the small, growing sites this ranking targets, we favor OptiMonk's free starting allowance and ability to run multiple ecommerce campaigns. That is an editorial recommendation for this use case. It does not establish that OptiMonk has the easiest editor, fastest script or highest conversion rate.
Read the OptiMonk review →Does this ranking include every popup builder on the market?
No. It includes all 10 builders currently covered in our directory, each with an overview, review, pricing breakdown and alternatives page. Products outside that catalog have not been ranked here; their absence is not a negative assessment.
Browse the full directory →Which popup builders have a free plan?
Our profiles list a free plan for OptiMonk, Popupsmart, Poptin, Hello Bar, Adoric. Check the conditions: Hello Bar's free view allowance is lifetime, and Adoric's eligibility depends on the product and store type. The table's free-plan filter excludes trial-only offers.
Compare free options in the table →Can I compare the starting prices directly?
Only as a first budget check. The table shows USD monthly prices or monthly equivalents with the billing terms stated. Annual commitments, introductory discounts and different traffic allowances prevent a like-for-like comparison. Compare the tier that includes your required features at your expected usage, then check renewals and extra charges. Request a quote means the cost needs confirmation, not that the tool is free.
Check the billing details for each builder →Could a lower-ranked builder be better for my website?
Yes. A WordPress workflow may favor OptinMonster; capture with email and SMS may favor Privy. Dedicated Shopify testing can make Alia a stronger fit, while a team seeking managed onsite campaigns may prefer Wisepops. Use the best-fit column to make a shortlist, then compare those tools against your platform, budget and campaign requirements.
Compare your shortlisted builders →Does a higher rank mean a higher conversion rate?
No. This ranking uses published product information and the site's editorial research. We have not run a controlled conversion or performance benchmark across these builders for this page. Vendor case studies, customer ratings and campaign results are not combined into a score. Your audience, offer, timing and implementation need their own evaluation.
Read the ranking methodology →How current are the rankings and prices?
The editorial order was reviewed on September 17, 2026. Each pricing entry has its own recorded date and vendor source. The editorial review date does not mean every price or feature was rechecked that day. This page is not a live pricing feed; confirm the plan, allowance and final charge on the vendor's site before subscribing.
