Where Privy fits
Shopify stores that want popups plus the follow-up email and SMS in one bill, and do not already run Klaviyo or Attentive as the sending stack.
Strengths
- Popups, email and SMS ship from one Shopify app
- Unlimited email sends on paid Email plans; 15-day trial needs no card
- 4.5 stars from 3,969 Shopify App Store reviews as of 23 Aug 2026
- Convert targeting covers cart value, exit intent, device and URL
Limitations
- No free plan for accounts opened after 8 July 2025
- Price steps up with mailable-contact count as the list grows
- SMS sending is live in the US and Canada only
- Shopify reviews still flag billing surprises and thin reporting
Privy is a fair buy for a Shopify store that wants popups and the follow-up email in one app, and does not already pay Klaviyo or Attentive to send. It is the wrong buy if you only need a popup. Shopify App Store rating on 23 August 2026: 4.5 stars from 3,969 reviews. Paid plans start at $24/month for displays or $30 for email.
We first wrote this review in January 2023, when Privy still sold a free popup plan. That plan is gone for new accounts. The product is now an email and SMS suite with Convert attached. Rank it against popup builders and it looks expensive. Rank it against Klaviyo and it looks simpler and cheaper, with a thinner editor.
Should you use Privy in 2026?
Yes, if all four are true:
- The store is on Shopify (BigCommerce is fine; Wix is thinner).
- You do not already send from Klaviyo, Attentive or Postscript.
- You want a popup live this week, not a six-week ESP project.
- You can live with price that steps up as the list grows.
No, if you only need on-site campaigns. Poptin, Popupsmart and OptiMonk do that job without selling you an ESP. No, if Klaviyo is already in the stack. Pay Privy $24/month for Displays-only, or skip Privy and pick a popup tool with a better editor.
What do the ratings say?
| Source | Score | Sample | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify App Store | 4.5 / 5 | 3,969 reviews | 23 Aug 2026 |
| G2 (alternatives listing) | 4.6 / 5 | 122 reviews | 23 Aug 2026 |
Shopify mix: 74% five-star, 15% four-star, 4% one-star. Recent five-stars name named agents and same-day chat. Recent one-stars name billing. That split has been stable for years: the product is easy, the invoice is the fight.
G2's sample is too small to outweigh Shopify. We could not load G2's full review index (it is a JS app). The 4.6 / 122 figure is from G2's own Privy alternatives page.
This site does not invent a 4.6 of its own. The verdict is the paragraphs, not a badge.
What is actually good?
One install for capture and send. Most popup tools stop at the form. Privy keeps going into the inbox and, if you buy credits, the phone. For a store under roughly $1M GMV that has no ESP, that is the whole pitch.
Convert targeting is not a toy. Cart value, product IDs, exit intent, device, URL, traffic type, known vs unknown. Enough to stop showing a 10% welcome to someone who already has $80 in the cart.
Unlimited email sends on paid Email plans. You pay for the list, not the blast. SMS is the opposite: credits, US and Canada only.
Trial is honest. 15 days, no card, then the product turns off. No zombie free plan that keeps a branded bar on the site.
What is actually bad?
No free plan for new accounts. The 2023 review on this URL sold "unlimited popups for $0". That is not the deal anymore. See Privy pricing.
The list is the bill. $30 at 1,500 contacts, $90 at 5,000, $165 at 10,000. A store that grows is a store that gets a new invoice. Autoscaling is automatic. There is no "stay on this tier" switch.
SMS geography. Live in the US and Canada. UK and Australia are "coming soon" on the pricing page as of 23 August 2026. If your list is in Europe, Privy SMS is not a plan. It is a promise.
The editor ceiling. Reviewers still want custom fonts in newsletters, more template control, and a dashboard that does not hide the next button. Fine for a first year. Tight once a designer joins.
Billing hygiene. Cancel each plan yourself. Closing Shopify does nothing. The 10-day refund window is short and case-by-case.
Privy vs a dedicated popup builder
| Job | Privy | Dedicated popup tool |
|---|---|---|
| First opt-in live today | Yes | Yes |
| Follow-up email in the same app | Yes | No, you bring an ESP |
| Spin-to-win / quizzes | Yes | Often stronger (OptiMonk, Poptin) |
| Free tier | No (new accounts) | Often yes |
| Price at 50k pageviews, popups only | $84/month | Usually lower |
| Best when | You also need to send | You already send elsewhere |
If the job is "popup", Privy is mid-pack and priced like an ESP. If the job is "popup plus mail", it is in a smaller field and the $30 Email plan is the comparison that matters.
Frequently asked questions
Is Privy good enough to replace Klaviyo?
For a small Shopify store, yes, until it is not. Segmentation, deliverability tooling and the email editor are shallower. The usual path we hear: Privy for year one, Klaviyo when the list and the team both grow. Keep Convert or switch the popup too. Do not run both as ESPs.
Has support got worse since the Attentive deal?
Shopify reviews in 2026 still praise named agents. Chat hours are 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EST weekdays. There is no phone line. That is a smaller team than Attentive's enterprise desk, which is the point of the product.
The alternatives shortlist: Privy alternatives.
