11 popup types
Popup types, by the job they do
Grouped by what the popup is trying to do, not by the tool that built it. Each page carries the trigger that suits the job, the consent rule that applies to it, and the builders worth shortlisting.
Announcement popups
An announcement popup is a timed notice, not a lead form. Use a slim bar for shipping delays, sales windows and events. Keep cookie consent in its own dialog. Google still treats full-screen promotional overlays as intrusive interstitials, especially on mobile after a search click.
Cart abandonment popups
Most carts do not fail because the visitor missed a coupon. Baymard's 50-study average sits at 70.22% abandonment, and the top fixable reasons are extra costs, slow delivery and forced accounts. An on-site popup can state shipping, offer guest checkout or ask why they are leaving. It cannot repair a 14-field checkout.
Email popups
An email popup is a form with a reason to give you the address. Across 1.24 billion displays in 2025, Omnisend measured a 2.1% average conversion. Sleeknote's 2026 set of 516 million views landed at 4.23%. The gap is targeting and offer, not a new widget type. First-load full-screen walls still fail Google's interstitial test.
Feedback survey popups
A feedback popup is a question after a task, not a newsletter form with a smiley face. Ask one thing, on the page where the task ended. Keep it off first load and off checkout. If the answer can identify a person, treat it as personal data. NPS, CSAT and 'why did you leave' are different campaigns.
Form popups
A form popup is any overlay that asks for fields beyond a single email. Demo requests, support, callbacks and surveys all fit. Keep the first step to three fields or fewer. Omnisend's 2025 set of 1.24 billion displays saw signup conversion fall from about 2.1% to 1.5% at four fields. Consent copy belongs next to the button, not in a cookie banner.
Gamified popups
A gamified popup is a wheel, scratch card or catch-the-gift overlay that trades a play for an email. Sleeknote's 2026 set of 516 million views put spin-to-win at 8.67% conversion against 3.70% without the game. That lift is real. So is the junk-list risk if every slice is a win and the prize is a code people already had.
Increase sales popups
A sales popup is an overlay with a path to a cart, not a newsletter form wearing a red button. Use it to state shipping, raise AOV, or recover a leaving cart. Baymard's 50-study average abandonment is 70.22%. Fixing extra costs and forced accounts does more than minting a new code. First-load takeovers still fail Google's interstitial test.
Phone number collecting popups
A phone popup is an SMS or call opt-in, not a second field on a newsletter form. In the US, marketing texts generally need prior express written consent. Since 11 April 2025 the FCC requires you to honour opt-outs by any reasonable means within ten business days. Keep the number optional, and keep email on its own form.
Promotion popups
A promotion popup is a timed offer on a matching page: a sale window, a threshold to free shipping, a new drop. Schedule a start and an end. Baymard's 70.22% average cart abandonment is mostly extra costs and checkout friction, not a missing firework overlay. Keep first-load full-screen takeovers off mobile search traffic.
Social sharing popups
A social sharing popup is a follow or share prompt, not a lead form. Show it after the reader finishes, not on first paint. Native share sheets on phones beat a grid of dead Twitter icons. Google still flags full-screen promotional overlays on mobile search traffic. Autoplay video is a fast way to fail that test.
User engagement increasing popups
An engagement popup is a related article, a quiz or a click-to-open helper, not a discount shouting over the hero. If the overlay appears before the reader starts, it is not engagement. Google's interstitial rule still applies on mobile search. Core Web Vitals now use INP (200ms), and a heavy widget can fail it.
