Popupsmart Review

The verdict

Popupsmart is a good first popup tool if you need a free plan, a Shopify install, or a spin-to-win campaign. It is a weaker buy if split testing is why you are paying.

Where Popupsmart fits

Shopify stores and small sites that want a working popup the same day, with a real free plan and gamification included.

Strengths

  • Free plan is usable: 5K pageviews, one live popup, no card required
  • Shopify app rates 4.8/5 from 50 reviews with a one-click install
  • Spin-to-win and lottery-ball gamification ship on every plan
  • Unlimited live popups from the first paid plan

Limitations

  • A/B testing starts only on Advanced ($57.50/mo billed annually)
  • Free plan has no analytics, one website, and a 5K pageview cap
  • Pageview overage is $10 per extra 10K when auto-extend is on
  • Reviewers still report domain verification taking more than one try

Popupsmart is a good first popup tool if you need a free plan, a Shopify install, or a spin-to-win campaign. It is a weaker buy if split testing is why you are paying: A/B testing starts at Advanced, $57.50/month billed annually, on popupsmart.com/pricing as of 23 August 2026.

This site is independent. Popupsmart is one of 11 builders we cover. The numbers below are sourced. Where a number is a vendor claim or a review-platform snippet we could not recount, it is labelled that way.

What still holds from 2023, and what does not?

The old review on this URL praised the editor, device and geo targeting, "unlimited domains on Basic," and a free trial. Two of those are now wrong.

  • There is no trial. There is a forever free plan (5,000 pageviews, one website, one live popup).
  • Basic is three websites, not unlimited. Unlimited websites start at Expert ($132.50/month billed annually).
  • A/B testing is not on Basic. It starts at Advanced.

What still holds: setup is fast, targeting is broad, support is the thing reviewers mention first, and domain verification can take more than one attempt.

What do reviewers actually say?

Source Score Sample Checked
Shopify App Store 4.8 / 5 50 reviews (45 five-star, 2 four-star, 1 two-star, 2 one-star) 23 Aug 2026
G2 4.5 / 5 141 reviews (public snippet; the page is JS-gated so we could not recount) Aug 2026
Trustpilot 4.2 / 5 42 reviews in search results Unverified: the Trustpilot page challenged the fetch

Shopify reviews we could read in full:

  • un-wrapped (Netherlands, 10 Feb 2026): used the free app for a holiday-closed notice. Wanted to schedule the popup in advance. Couldn't.
  • Chic Speak Boutique (US, 18 Dec 2025): went from 0 to 4% conversion after other free apps. Five days of use.
  • Smart Battery Bar (Canada, 5 Dec 2025): praised the knowledge hub and booking a support call. About 19 hours of use.

Short-tenure reviews are common on new Shopify listings. Weight them less than a six-month install.

G2's public "pros and cons" page names ease of use as the dominant like (56 mentions on page 2 of that view). We could not pull a matching cons count without the JS page.

What is Popupsmart good at?

A free plan that publishes. One live popup on one site at 5,000 pageviews is enough to learn whether a wheel or an exit offer converts on your theme. Poptin is the other tool in this set that does that honestly. OptinMonster still has no free plan.

Shopify without a snippet. The 2026 embed app creates the account, pulls fonts and colours, and starts from a campaign goal. That is a better first hour than pasting JavaScript into theme.liquid, which is still the path for everyone else (and still documented).

Gamification on every plan. Spin-to-win, lottery ball, surprise box. OptiMonk is stronger if you also want on-site personalisation around those games. Popupsmart is the cheaper way to get the game itself.

Targeting breadth. Exit intent (with low/medium/high sensitivity on desktop; upward-scroll on mobile), URL contains/matches, UTM, geo to city, SiteData for cart amount, Smart Mode on paid plans. You will not run out of rules before you run out of traffic.

Integrations that are native, not Zapier-only. Mailchimp, Klaviyo, HubSpot, ActiveCampaign, Salesforce, GA4, Meta Pixel. Zapier and Make cover the rest. HubSpot needs a static list; dynamic lists do not appear in the dropdown. That is in the vendor's own HubSpot article.

Where does it fall short?

A/B testing is a paid-tier feature, and not the first paid tier. Basic at $32.50/month billed annually still cannot split traffic. If testing is the purchase reason, start the trial on OptinMonster or look at OptiMonk's free-plan testing (as last written on our OptiMonk page).

The free plan has no analytics. Views, leads, conversion rate, and breakdowns by country/referrer/page/device live on paid plans. You can export leads. You cannot see whether the popup is doing anything without upgrading or piping events to GA4.

Overage is easy to trip. $10 per extra 10,000 pageviews with auto-extend on. A homepage that gets a Reddit hit can post a second invoice. The cap ($99 until 250K extra) is documented; it is still a surprise if you never opened the FAQ.

Verification is still fiddly. Embed the snippet once, add the domain, click Unverified, open the site, Refresh. Ad blockers, a second paste of the snippet, or a tag-manager container that never publishes will all look like "the popup is broken." Several 2023 reviews called this out; the 2026 help article still has a troubleshooting section for it.

Scheduling on the Shopify free app. One February 2026 Shopify review said they could not schedule a closed-for-holiday message ahead of time. The main builder does have scheduling (what-is-scheduling-on in the vendor help). Whether that control exists in the embed app on Free is unverified from here.

Refund copy disagrees with itself. Hero + FAQ: 7 days monthly, 15 days annual. A later block on the same pricing URL: 15 days monthly, one month annual. We flag it on pricing. Do not assume.

Who is this for?

Buy, or start on Free, if you are a Shopify merchant, a small site, or anyone who wants a wheel live today. The Shopify how-to is the install path.

Do not buy it as your testing stack. Do not buy it as your ESP. Capture here, send in Klaviyo or Mailchimp.

Agencies: team seats are 0 / 1 / 2 / 2 / 4 by plan. There is a separate Agency plan we did not price; the public pricing page does not list it.

How does the 2026 product compare to the 2023 one?

Added since the last time this page was a real review: AI popup builder, Shopify embed app, direct font upload (ttf/otf/woff), Salesforce and Meta Pixel on the matrix, Make.com, campaign filing on Pro+, the Advanced plan as a new rung, and the free plan replacing a trial.

Removed or tightened: unlimited websites on Basic (now three), the old Pro 500K / Expert 1M quotas (now 250K / 500K), and A/B testing as something you could assume on a cheap paid plan.

The editor is still Customize → Style → Segment → Publish. If you learned it in 2023, you still know it.

Should you use Popupsmart?

Yes, on Free, to see if a popup belongs on the site at all. Yes, on Basic, if you need unlimited campaigns and no branding and you will not run tests. Yes, on Advanced, if you will run tests and you like the rest of the product.

No, if you already live in OptinMonster's test reports, or you want Privy's email and SMS in one bill, or you need Wisepops-level rules and will take the demo.

Next: pricing, alternatives, or a head-to-head (vs OptiMonk, vs OptinMonster, vs Privy, vs Poptin).
