Can you change an OptiMonk campaign template after you create it?

Emel DalabasmazUpdated August 23, 20263 min read

You cannot switch the template on an existing OptiMonk campaign. That is still OptiMonk's own help-centre rule, last updated 19 November 2025. Create a new campaign from the template you want, or duplicate the old one and restyle the copy. Pause or delete the original so two overlays do not fire on the same URL.

Can the template of a live OptiMonk campaign be swapped?

No. OptiMonk's help article (updated 19 November 2025) says once a campaign is created, its template cannot be changed. The layout you picked at create time is the layout you have.

You can still edit copy, images, colours, targeting and triggers inside that layout. If you need a wheel instead of a box, or a bar instead of a modal, that is a new campaign.

OptiMonk is best for stores that want spin-to-win and other gamified campaigns without building them from scratch. That strength is also why the template lock matters: a wheel and a box are different objects, not a coat of paint.

How do you start over with a different template?

From OptiMonk's own steps:

  1. Log in and open Campaigns.
  2. Create a new campaign.
  3. Pick the template you actually want (box, bar, wheel, fullscreen, and so on).
  4. Rebuild targeting: URLs, devices, frequency, schedule.
  5. In Campaigns, inactivate or delete the old campaign before you set the new one live.

If you leave both active, visitors can see two overlays in one session. That is a popup mistake and it hurts INP for no gain. Sleeknote's 2026 data is a reminder that one well-timed campaign (4.23% average across 516 million views) beats a pile of them. Copy the trigger too: Omnisend measured 2.4% conversion after a 6 to 10 second delay vs 1.9% on immediate display (2025, 1.24 billion displays). A new template that fires at 0 seconds is a new problem.

Copy the offer and the legal line by hand. Duplicate does that for you; a brand-new campaign does not.

When is duplicate the better path?

When the new campaign should look like the old one: same fields, same targeting, new seasonal copy.

OptiMonk's help article:

  1. Open Campaigns.
  2. Duplicate the campaign.
  3. Edit the copy, images and schedule on the copy.
  4. Inactivate the original when the copy is ready.

Duplicate will not turn a modal into a wheel. If that is the job, use a new campaign.

A/B testing inside OptiMonk is for variants of a campaign, not for swapping the underlying template. If you need a true template test, run two campaigns on a split of traffic, or use a tool whose whole product is tests. OptinMonster is best for teams who will live in split tests; it is a different product with its own editor rules.

What should you check before you pause the old campaign?

  • The new campaign is hidden on checkout and account URLs.
  • Frequency caps match what you had (once per session is the default you want).
  • Mobile is a sheet or bar if the new template is large. Google's intrusive interstitial guidance still applies to full-screen promotional overlays on mobile search.
  • Cookie and email copy still sit on the form. A new template is a chance to drop pre-ticked boxes.
  • Integrations (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, webhooks) are connected on the new campaign, not only the old one.

If you only needed new copy, you did not need a new template. Open the editor and change the text. Support: support@optimonk.com, as listed on their help article.
