How Can I Use Exit-Intent Trigger on Popupsmart?

Emel DalabasmazUpdated September 6, 20263 min read

Popupsmart’s exit-intent trigger uses mouse behavior on desktop and upward scrolling speed on mobile. It is a signal that a visitor may leave, not a guarantee that the visitor is abandoning a purchase. Enable mobile display separately if phones are part of the campaign.

Source: Popupsmart exit-intent documentation, checked September 6, 2026. The verification and measurement suggestions below are editorial guidance. See Popupsmart pricing for plan details.

Turn on exit intent

  1. Edit or create a campaign and open Segment → Edit Segment. For a new campaign, select a predefined segment or create one in My Segment.
  2. Under User Behaviour, choose Add user behavior targeting.
  3. Add Exit Intent and choose a sensitivity level.
  4. Save and review the targeting summary under Publish.
  5. Confirm that the campaign is switched on in the dashboard. Enable mobile devices if required.

Choose and test sensitivity

Level Vendor’s description Practical check
Low Cursor must approach very close to the close icon Confirm the popup can trigger without requiring an unrealistic gesture.
Medium Suggested starting point for most cases Try normal reading and navigation as well as an attempt to leave.
High A slight attempt to leave can trigger it Check whether routine pointer movements interrupt the visitor too early.

The documentation describes desktop behavior using both movement speed and proximity to the close icon. It does not publish numeric thresholds. Treat the settings as options to test, not measurable pixel distances or a promise to detect every departure.

On mobile, use a real touch device to check upward scrolling. Shrinking a desktop browser window does not reproduce a phone’s input behavior. The guide does not document a numeric mobile scroll-speed threshold or guarantee interception of the browser’s back button.

Run a launch check

Use a campaign and audience you can safely inspect. Record the device, page, sensitivity and result so that a failed test can be reproduced.

  • Eligible desktop page: Open a page allowed by the audience rules and try the documented leaving motion. Check that the intended campaign appears.
  • Normal desktop reading: Move between content and controls. Look for interruptions before the visitor has understood the offer.
  • Eligible mobile page: Confirm mobile is enabled, then test upward scrolling on a phone. Check the close control, form and success step.
  • Excluded page: Repeat on a page that should not qualify. Use URL targeting to inspect page eligibility.
  • Repeat visit: Record the campaign’s repeat-display settings before testing again. A prior dismissal may make a repeat test different from the first visit.

Troubleshoot a popup that does not appear

Start with campaign status, published changes and installation. Then inspect device eligibility, URL rules and other segment conditions. Test one change at a time; increasing sensitivity cannot repair a missing installation or an excluded device.

If it works on desktop only, check mobile activation before changing the creative. If it appears too early, compare a lower sensitivity with ordinary browsing and ensure that the offer remains easy to dismiss. If results differ across devices, capture the actual page, browser and action for support rather than describing every failure as an exit-intent problem.

Judge usefulness beyond the trigger firing

A successful trigger test proves that the popup can appear under the tested conditions. It does not prove that sales were recovered. Review captured leads, downstream subscriber or order records, and visitor experience separately. Use a suitable comparison design before attributing additional revenue to the popup.

Continue with campaign metrics to keep display, lead and downstream results distinct.

Questions before you decide

Frequently asked questions

Does mobile exit intent use the same signal as desktop?

No. Popupsmart describes mouse behavior on desktop and upward scrolling speed on mobile. The campaign must also be enabled for mobile devices before it can display there.

Can exit intent run when the campaign is switched off?

No. The vendor explicitly asks users to check the dashboard campaign status: an off campaign is deactivated. Confirm the active status as well as the exit-intent configuration.
