Sumo is not a living rival. Showit bought it in December 2023 and rebranded it to BDOW! in April 2024. sumo.com now loads an unrelated product (Refract). New buyers pick Privy for Shopify email and SMS ($30/month email; privy.com/pricing, 23 August 2026), or a living popup tool if they only need the form. Existing Sumo users: BDOW, not a second Sumo licence. Notes: Sumo pricing.

New buyer Yes No
Existing user Stay if the store still fits Move to BDOW or replace

This page used to compare two popup tools. That comparison is over. The URL stays because people still search it.

What happened to Sumo?

The 2023 product was a bundle: opt-in forms, share buttons, heat maps, one script. Showit acquired it, renamed it BDOW!, and kept selling popups at bdow.com. The WordPress plugin is untested on the last three WordPress majors. Share buttons and heat maps in leftover Sumo UI are not a reason to keep the install.

Privy never bundled heat maps. It bundled Flows: welcome, abandoned cart, win-back, back-in-stock. That product still exists.

Should a Sumo user switch to Privy?

Only if they also want to send Shopify email and SMS from the same app. If they only need the popup, BDOW is the line-of-succession, and Poptin or Popupsmart are cleaner new-tool picks.

Do not run Sumo (or BDOW) and Privy Convert on the same store. Two on-site scripts fighting for exit intent is how you annoy a shopper.

How do prices compare?

Privy 23 August 2026: Privy pricing. $24 displays, $30 email, $45 email + 1,250 SMS credits.

We do not publish a Sumo starting price. BDOW prices live on bdow.com/pricing. Check that page if you are migrating, not this one.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sumo still send email?

The Sumo brand does not sell. BDOW still connects to the usual ESPs. Privy sends email itself on the Email plan.

Can I still buy Sumo Pro at $39?

Not as Sumo. That 2023 figure is historical. Do not budget with it.
